A Charleston man was sentenced for causing a fatal crash while distracted by phone apps, facing three years in prison.
A Charleston man, Melvin Otto Lamb, III, has been sentenced following a serious multi-vehicle collision he caused while distracted by his phone. On June 12, 2021, Lamb was involved in a nine-vehicle pileup on Highway 17 in Mount Pleasant after he rear-ended a stationary subcompact SUV while scrolling through various phone applications.
Lamb was reportedly driving a Chevrolet Tahoe at a speed of 68 mph, significantly over the posted limit of 45 mph, and failed to slow down or apply brakes prior to impact. The crash data recorder in his vehicle confirmed this, leading to his guilty plea for reckless homicide just ahead of his trial. The unfortunate incident resulted in the death of the SUV’s driver, with Lamb sustaining only minor injuries.
